In a historic announcement today by the UK Government, specialist doctors have been given the option to legally issue prescriptions for cannabis-based medicines from 1 November 2018 if they feel that their patients could benefit from this treatment.

The law change came after the Home Secretary Sajid Javid listened to concerns from parents of children with conditions such as severe epilepsy and follows much of the rest of the world in acknowledging the benefits of medical cannabis.

Today’s announcement follows Sajid Javid recently amending the classification of medicinal cannabis, placing it in schedule 2 of the 2001 Misuse of Drugs Regulations, thereby allowing clinicians to prescribe it. As per the government’s announcement today, the new law will not limit the types of conditions that can be considered for treatment and specialist doctors will no longer need to seek approval from an expert panel in order for patients to access the medicines. The full announcement can be found here.

Commenting on today’s development, Nick Davis, Chief Executive of Memery Crystal said: “This is welcome news for the large number of patients with serious health conditions who can now benefit from medical cannabis. Memery Crystal has been at the heart of the drive to make medicinal cannabis legal in the UK and as such, we are delighted that UK has now joined the ranks of many countries globally who have already legalised medical cannabis and acted in the best interests of those who need it.”
