Poetry in Wood

Poetry in Wood is an art-and-craft based training and enterprise project giving people with learning difficulties an opportunity to express themselves and capitalise on their individual creative abilities.

Poetry in Wood was started by Spitalfields Small Business Association (SsBA) in 1991 with funding from Spitalfields Task Force. Its unique training programmes include accredited courses in woodwork and print making and are designed to recognise ability over disability, build confidence, teach life skills and create meaningful employment opportunities.

Poetry in Wood’s enterprise programme provides employment to students qualifying from its training programmes. The enterprise team creates a wide variety of works, including external signage, decorative murals, interior decorations, picture and mirror frames and much more. Much of the work is commissioned by private and corporate sponsors, including City firms, architects, builders, government agencies, voluntary sector projects, and local and national charities.
