I graduated from Durham University with an undergraduate degree in Philosophy. Following this, I did my GDL and LPC at the College of Law in Birmingham. Applying for training contracts was an overwhelming experience with so many firms to choose from. I knew that I wanted to train with a firm that gave you responsibility from the start and valued its trainees. Memery Crystal appealed to me because, as a mid sized firm who only takes on 5-6 trainees each year, I knew I would get hands-on training that the larger city firms could not offer.
The interview process was one of the most thorough I experienced while searching for a training contract. The effort that Memery Crystal puts into recruiting people who will embrace the firm's values is commendable, as the result is a welcoming workplace of like-minded individuals who make you feel part of the team from the outset. Everyone is approachable - including the Managing Partner!
In the first seat of my training contract, I worked in the firm's dispute resolution department. I found the work interesting and very varied - no two days were the same. I was given a wide variety of challenging and stimulating tasks. In my first three months, I was attending conferences with Counsel, drafting a wide variety of documents including witness statements and instructions to Counsel and was given responsibility of a matter. Although the level of responsibility was initially daunting, there was always support available and it was the best possible way to learn what life as a solicitor can be like.
Mid-seat and end of seat appraisals ensure that you get important feedback on your work. This enables you to identify any areas that need improved, and the firm is always prepared to arrange training for you if you feel you need an extra boost. The firm is invested in providing excellent training to develop your skills, as ultimately they hope that you will continue your career with them.
