I grew up in Ireland and studied Law and Politics at Queen's University Belfast before doing the Legal Practice Course at Nottingham Law School in 2007/2008. When I was applying for a training contract I wanted to join a City firm where I would be given responsibility at an early stage and a variety of stimulating work. An important part of any training programme is having enough contact with senior colleagues so as to benefit from their knowledge and experience. For that reason I wanted to join a notable mid-sized firm, so as to have a direct working relationship with partners and senior associates while being involved in complex and challenging work for a broad range of clients. With these criteria in mind I applied for a place on the Memery Crystal vacation scheme in April 2008.
My early research indicated that Memery Crystal was the type of firm I had been looking for. The vacation scheme was an excellent opportunity to experience the working environment and the kind of matters I could expect to deal with as a Memery Crystal trainee. The placement confirmed my impression of the firm as one that treats its trainees as being part of the team and involves them in client matters at every level. Although I had been offered interviews and placements with other City firms, when Memery Crystal offered me a training contract I did not hesitate in accepting. The character of the firm was exactly what I was looking for.
I am currently in my first six-month seat in the Employment Department. From my first week I felt I was part of the team and was encouraged to contribute during group discussions. I became involved directly with clients at a very early stage and have played a role in deals where a number of departments worked together on the same matter. These kinds of experiences have helped me develop relationships with our clients and gain a greater understanding of their businesses. In particular, my work with other departments has been useful for getting to know colleagues throughout the firm.
The Memery Crystal training programme involves working with partners who are widely recognised in their areas of expertise. Regular mid-seat and end-seat appraisals provide feedback and direction to the training process. So far I have found my work rewarding and varied. My colleagues at all levels have been helpful and supportive and take an active role in all matters. Further questions, comments and discussions are always encouraged.
My decision to apply to Memery Crystal was based on its strong reputation and the attention paid to its trainees. The firm sees its trainees as the partners of the future and approaches the training process with that in mind. In addition to the professional aspects of work it is important to have friendly personal interaction in the office. As I have settled into my first seat and attended Memery Crystal events I have found that we have an excellent group of good-humoured and intelligent people who create a positive and fruitful working environment. I look forward to gaining more experience and responsibility at Memery Crystal in the coming months and years.
