The training contract application process is quite a challenge. From the outset I knew that I wanted to join a prominent firm with a strong reputation and with an emphasis on trainees as individuals. After attending numerous law fairs and recruitment presentations I focused on applying to mid-sized City law firms. I also found it really helpful to talk with trainees who had been through the process already.

I studied law at Coventry University and completed the LPC at Nottingham Law School. Before starting my training contract I decided to take a year out to go travelling and do some volunteer work in South America, which I would recommend to anybody – it was fantastic!

Memery Crystal’s assessment centre is very thorough as it is split over two days and includes legal exercises, a presentation and an evening meal with key individuals at the firm. I found it provided me with ample time to shed my interview day nerves and enjoy the whole process. It was also instrumental in my decision to choose Memery Crystal – a firm with a genuine personality and a real commitment to its staff.

I am currently in my first seat in the Corporate Department. The quality of work so far has been most engaging. Trainees are actively encouraged to show initiative and take responsibility when working on a deal. Within the firm there is a great support network to help trainees drive their development forward. As a trainee you sit with your mentor who actively assists in advancing your technical knowledge.

Within just a few weeks of starting with the firm I found myself meeting with a client to explain the verification procedure on a fund raising deal. I have also drafted a due diligence report for an acquisition of business assets and appeared in the County Court representing a key client.

The nature and distribution of the work in the corporate department is such that I have worked directly with a number of different associates and partners. This opportunity to work closely with highly experienced lawyers, many of whom are recognised leaders in their respective fields, has been pivotal in my development as a trainee. There is a great atmosphere amongst the staff and particularly amongst the trainees, who are always keen on Friday drinks. The firm really values each individual which means you are always working in a team and dealing directly with clients.

A career in the legal profession is challenging and very rewarding but I can thoroughly recommend it and Memery Crystal is the ideal place to start.
