John is Head of Intellectual Property at Memery Crystal. He has extensive experience of IP litigation, ranging from patent infringement and ownership disputes; trade secret and confidential information cases; and copyright, trade mark and domain name disputes. He is equally experienced in non-contentious intellectual property, IT and transactional work including all forms of IP licensing, technology transfer, character merchandising, securitisation using intellectual property, brand strategy and advising on the acquisition and maintenance of trade mark portfolios.
John’s experience extends to IT, both contentious and non-contentious, new media, data protection and data privacy and freedom of information.
John is also a highly regarded specialist in public law and judicial review relating particularly to universities and higher education research organisations. He has acted in over 30 judicial reviews, some of which have become leading cases, covering issues such as plagiarism, fitness to practice, student admissions, expulsions and challenges to funding.
For a number of years, John has been ranked as a leading individual by Chambers UK both for Intellectual Property and for Education: Institutions (Higher & Further Education), where he has been praised for "having a good eye for detail and also seeing the big picture."
John is Visiting Professorial Fellow in Intellectual Property at Queen Mary, University of London IP Research Institute, a visiting lecturer at the IP Academy in Singapore and visiting lecturer in IP at University College London's Institute of Brand and Innovation Law. He is the author of Commercial Secrecy: Law and Practice, co-author of the “Information and Ideas” section of Butterworth’s Education Law Handbook and author of many articles and reviews in academic and professional journals. He lectures extensively on IP and related subjects in the UK and abroad.
